Sculpture - In Progress

Second Project: Marvin the Martian

My first project in Sculpting Lifeforms class is sculpting Popeye based off turnaround and character model sheets. We used a translucent, black and white polymer clay and mixed them all together to get a gray color. The process is pretty interesting.

First, I constructed an armature using 1/8" aluminum wire, 24 gauge steel wire, foil and epoxy putty to reinforce the joints.

Clay is added after attaching the armature to a wooden base.

Details were sculpted using dental tools sold at the swap meet at $2 a piece. Sketchy.

Details completed before raking, finishing and baking.

Viking Penguin in 3D

I wanted to turn my 2D Viking Penguin character into a 3D character. This is currently a work in progress.

Subdivision model

Poly model

Model turnaround

I rigged him with IK/FK, elbow twist attributes for the arm controls using pole vector, spine controls and a variety of attributes for the foot controls. He has a set of facial expressions using blendshapes.
I started experimenting with applying fur to my model but it obviously needs some tweaking.

Short Film: Spark and the Cricket

This is my student film for my BFA with a concentration in Animation and Entertainment Art. Synopsis: A young dragon is frustrated at his inability to breathe fire rendering him unprepared for tomorrows fire-breathing exam. Unfortunately his much needed sleep is disrupted by an unwelcome visitor.

I modeled, rigged, textured and animated the characters in Maya. The simple environment was built using NURBS. Spark and the cricket are fully rigged with IK/FK, spine controls, arm and finger controls in Sparks' case and 6 fully rigged legs with controls including knee twist attributes for the cricket. I gave both characters a variety of facial expressions using blendshapes.
Only the introductory pan and the fire breathing sequence are rendered out using mental ray. Someday when I have 10+ hrs to waste staring at the script editor and Fcheck I'll render out the whole thing.
